Alexis de Tocqueville wrote in “Democracy in America” that Russia and the United States seemed marked out by the will of Heaven to sway the destinies of half the globe. Perhaps the historical parallel does not end there. Gorbachev’s dereliction of duty (at least that what his critics accuse him of) led to the collapse of Communism in Europe. While that was a good thing, anyone with a sense of duty or patriotism can understand the sense of betrayal that Mikhail Gorbachev arouses in Russians, especially after he received a home in California, to live out the rest of his days in luxury, while those he betrayed struggle daily. For his part, Donald Trump deserted his followers. He had all the power in the world to stop the theft of Election 2020 – really, the theft of the United States by China, but instead threw all of his supporters, those who risked their careers and even lives for him, under the bus. These events are separated by 30 years and it is premature to predict a similar dissolution of the United States (and I hope it does not come to pass), but I cannot help noticing a same abdication of leadership in the last months of President Gorbachev and President Trump.
