
Britney Spears, whose life and $60 million dollar fortune have been micromanaged by her father, whom a Court appointed as a conservator in 2008, won a legal victory toward her own emancipation on July 14, when a California judge ruled that she may choose her own lawyer, to represent her in future court hearings.
Since her father was made conservator of her person and fortune in 2008, he and his team have regulated even the most intimate details of her life, forcing her, for example, to have an IUD placed in her body, without her consent. The manner in which she has been treated, in regard to her person and earnings, makes one recall tales of Soviet psychiatry and Jackie Coogan in the same instance. Soviet psychiatry had a reputation for forcing mind-destroying drug treatments on political dissidents and refuseniks, while Jackie Coogan was left penniless by his parents, who took every cent of the money he earned as a silver screen child star.
